Guitarist
Since 1985...

Although way before my time, I was initially inspired to learn to play guitar in the mid 1980's by the music of Buddy Holly & The Crickets, as well as other legendary guitarists from that pioneering period in the 1950s Rock & Roll scene, such as Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Duane Eddy, Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps,  I then moved through each decade, studying guitar/music from every era right through the 60s (Beatles, Stones, Hank Marvin, Hendrix, 69 Woodstock etc), the 70s Led Zep/Jimmy Page, Robbie Krieger (The Doors), Santana, Crosby Stills Nash/Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Zal Cleminson/Sensational Aalex Harvey Band and other artists/guitar music from then, and into the 80s, being inspired by Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits, Dave Gilmour/Pink Floyd, Chris Rea, Robert Cray to name but a few.  In the 90s I spent time in Metal / Grunge bands and an appreciation for Steve Vai, It Bites (Francis Dunnery), Metallica, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc took hold. I was blown away by the movie "Crossroads", which featured Steve Vai and the phrasing in Steve's performances in that film, I can hear in my own solo work now....I adore his phrasing...it's so full of passion and emotion...". More recent bands/artists/guitarists are Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon.

Heavily influenced by Rock/Blues guitar styles, I also take inspiration from acoustic guitar playing from the likes of Don Mclean (finger picking style), Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Duane Allman, country blues, Robert Johnson blues/Eric Clapton RJ sessions and many many more..

I began my study of the guitar in March 1985, but in 1990, I took up Spanish Classical for a few months. U didn't stick with it, perhaps too regimented for the type of musician I was at that time, I did however love it.  That love of Spanish guitar continued and I have since taken it up again, being inspired by the wonderful music/guitar work by Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega and others. specifically Iberian related music.   It's in my genes. It wasn't until I began doing some family research that I discovered my surname "Carroll", a very old Irish name, derives from the Milesians, who came from Iberia, bringing with them the music of Spain/Portugal and the middle east, from where the Milesians derived from.  to Ireland. Every time I hear a Spanish guitar, I can hear it, feel it in my soul, my bones...its a deep affinity. It's in my DNA.

Thirty seven years since taking up the guitar, I continue to develop and learn more about my chosen instrument. I also have an appreciation for Gypsy Jazz and Jazz guitar and learning more.

I also play some Piano and have taught Guitar, Bass and basic Drums.
