Demo Production
I took up guitar in 1985, inspired by the music in The Buddy Holly Story, featuring Gary Busey, which led me onto the music of Buddy Holly & The Crickets. That music was way before my time, but something magical happened to me, and from there, I went on to study music from that era, in particular, guitar and then I went through every decade of modern pop/rock music, learning all the riffs etc and styles, songwriting techniques, vocal techniques, right up into the 90's, where I ended up fronting my own combos in Indie Rock & Pop. I started out in bands as a Lead Guitarist. I also became a vocalist and wrote my own songs, starting in the mid 1990's. I've previously signed Publishing with music publishers in the USA and also composed music for Film Shorts, animal documentary and some brand work too, for online content. I also studied Sound & Video Recording for a year at college then a year in Music Technology at college in the early 90s. I have been surrounded by sound/audio since I was a teenager, where I would record the ice cream van chimes, then play it back when the ice cream van left. It was a laugh to see neighbours come out looking for the van, when in fact it had left !
That aside. I have listened intently to music for nearly 40 years. It's ingrained in me. I have a small home studio set up, my DAW is Cubase and I have been writing and recording solidly for the past 3-4 years. I also compose Instrumentals too.
As far as modern music is concerned and my Mixing skills, I am constantly drawn back to the analogue era of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, where I personally feel, those were the best times for music, plus it's the music I cut my teeth on. The sound of music then compared to now is like night and day to me and I've beaten myself up for trying to make my mixes sound like music on the radio today. I just can't do it, I don't like the overproduced loudness of modern music. It's an assault to my ears and it's not how instruments sound in real time, when being played. Modern Production beefiness just doesn't float my boat. Maybe I'm just a traditionalist.
Im inspired by the sounds of those old Rock & Roll and Pop songs from a bygone era. Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zep, ELO, Fleetwood Mac etc etc....that golden era of sound, that's what I love to hear and that's what I want to achieve in my mixes. If I can do that, then I'm happy. Below you'll hear my mixes, with my songs or songs by others, which have a definite retro/vintage feel/vibe. I really don't care for modern radio friendly music now, the producers of said music have killed off musicianship too, no guitar solos, no other solos etc in music. it really has become too clinical and soulless for me. So I record my music, my way, with a nod and a wink to the golden era of music making, the 50s, 60s and 70's.
I have been making and mixing music since the early 90s and now I'm developing my skills/ability in learning how Master music properly. It's hard work, but one day it'll all click into place.
